Washington: Elliott Bay Book Company

If you’re in Seattle you really need to check out Elliott Bay Book Company. I LOVED the open space and high ceilings of this store! The bookstore is huge, and yet it manages to feel cozy. That is my idea of a successful use of space. No one feels like browsing a warehouse full of books, right? Sometimes a large store can work against you if you’re in the mood to spend some time browsing.

I was lucky enough to photograph this store before it opened on a Sunday morning, and you know what tickled me the most? The group of people waiting outside the doors for opening time. What a great neighborhood bookstore!

Oregon: Bloomsbury Books

Bloomsbury Books in Ashland, Oregon may not be the first independent bookstore that comes to mind when you think of Oregon, but let me tell you guys something: it should be. It has everything I've come to love (even more than ever) about indie bookstores, but more importantly, it feels like a store that you want to have nearby because it’s just that welcoming and comfortable of a bookstore.  I sometimes wonder if I’m the only one who walks into a bookstore and gets an initial good or bad vibe about the place. Do any of you guys do that? Well, truthfully, if there are books around, I don’t get a bad vibe exactly, but there are definitely some stores where I walk in and feel perfectly content to spend lots of time browsing for books. This was one of those stores.

Nevada: Sundance Bookstore

Sundance Bookstore is an indie store with a great selection of books, but it also has a great location that adds to its charm as a wonderful bookstore. It's located in an awesome old house in the heart of Reno, Nevada. The pictures of this store really do tell its story very well! It felt like a great bookstore where I could spend lots of time reading and browsing. I'm very glad I got a chance to visit! I even met an Ohio native bookseller and we got to talk about indie bookstores we love in that state, too. The indie bookstore world is a small one!
